The Billboards Project started from the question; How is the landscape used as a commodity? There were some questions raised within the project for example: Who is the target audience in terms of pedestrians or vehicle drivers. Of course, it could be deemed dangerous to be aimed at drivers after all they are keeping an eye on the road. It was apparent quickly though that they are indeed aimed at drivers. One of the reasons is because they are in areas where people don’t usually walk.
Another reason is (something I never noticed before) the advertisers will advertise on billboards right next to each other as you can see on the images. So is this in someway subliminal messaging?, or are they such a part of the landscape they have become the landscape? The project certainly opened up more questions along the way.
